Mar 16: Grow Your Voice: A Workshop to Explore, Experiment, & Strengthen Your Singing Voice

Grow Your Voice: A Workshop to Explore, Experiment, & Strengthen Your Singing Voice

When: Saturday, March 16, 2024, 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Where:  New City Center for Healing Justice, 3104 16th Ave S, Minneapolis
fb event link for sharing: https://fb.me/e/58TzIdfWL

Want to be a stronger, more confident singer?

The voice in your body is a seed of who you are. Depending on how it’s been tended over your life, your voice might feel strong and healthy – or it may feel more like it has a shallow root system, a weak stem, or fewer leaves or blossoms than desired. In voice work, your breath, posture, body tension, and fear of how you’re “supposed” to sound are all aspects that need tending to.

Join Conie and Liz for two hours of vocal tending and singing from your full breath and heart: give yourself and your voice loving, caring attention to grow strong, healthy, and beautiful. We want your voice to sing out and clearly communicate your care, pride, passion, hurt, and dreams to ourselves, our beloveds, our community, and our world.

*********************
  • Masks up please as an act of community care while Covid is surging. Thank you.
  • Sliding scale payment: $15-$40.
  • Please fill out the registration form here https://forms.gle/HqqDZ6LDADnvcrBx8 and Venmo/Paypal @ConieB to reserve your spot (confirm digits: 7530)
  • Two solidarity spots available for volunteers; inquire at goodtrouble@pointsoflightmusic.net.

Workshop leaders Conie Borchardt and Liz Digitale Anderson are GOOD TROUBLE, a queer mixed Asian songleading duo. They bring a wide variety of vocal experience and technique to share, including certification in the playful Five Elements Full Voice Method of Barbara McAfee (did you know your voice has fire and water in it?!), classical and musical theatre voice training, jazz improv, and a cappella beatboxing.

Eoghan Carrick

At age 13, other musicians told Eoghan he had a ‘bad’ voice. So he stopped his childhood love of singing. Recovering his voice has been a deeply challenging healing process with teachers and collaborators ranging from indigenous Sumatran singers to esteemed choral director Dr. Joy Sherman to the grief ceremonies brought to the West by Sibonfu Somé.

Today Eoghan serves as music director for the storydwelling community in his homeland of Bend, Oregon. Pre-pandemic he served as director for a regional community choir called Open Hub Singing. He has facilitated expansive Full Voice experiences with students, educators, business people, singers, both online and in-person. Eoghan actively engages an ongoing men’s circle and is committed to practicing an embodied, collaborative, gracious form of masculinity. He does not do this perfectly… To honor his ancestors, his joyful child, dear friends and his soul, Eoghan is finally recording his first album of original music for release in 2021. Vocal Public Service Announcement: Mask Speaking Tips

Understanding someone speaking while masked is challenging!

It doesn't have to be this way.

In this video, we talk with our colleague Eoghan Carrick, about frustrating mask experiences and offer some tips to be heard and understood more easily.

What ways have you found to make masked communication easier?  We welcome your experiences in the comments.

If this video was helpful, please pass it on!  Thank you for helping alleviate some of the frustrations during this challenging time.

Full Voice Coaching Testimony from Jenny

"I want to acknowledge the powerful the work you are doing with me! During our session yesterday, I noticed a rare depth of exhaustion arising from my tears, and recognized that this is touching a very, very deep place, pre-verbal, a place not accessed by all of the verbal trauma healing work I’ve done. It feels radical, integrative, and catalytic. I’m excited to do more, and deeply grateful. Thank you!"
~ Jenny, a Zoom client in Montana:
Doing vocal work during a respiratory pandemic can be done!  Reach out to shine@pointsoflightmusic.net to chat about what you want to accomplish and schedule a session.

Aug 3-10: Holden Village Musician

Andrea Sorum and I are heading to Holden Village in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State again this year.  This time in August, the 3rd-10th.

I'd say "Join us!" but just read this on their website:/

For the Lutherans among us, it's THE Pilgrimage to make so I'm not that surprised the WaitList is running.

We had a lot of fun last year.  Here's a few of the pictures from that trip (since I didn't post them online already).

C's Full Voice Story

We at Points of Light Music (PoLiMu) were looking over our content about Full Voice and realized we had lots of posts about when classes were and very little about why we thought it was amazing and important work.

So without further ado ...

C. met the Full Voice Work when she was searching for more support on her leadership journey.  She was the first in her family to have a college degree and hold a leadership position outside the family farm.  It was a landscape they were unfamiliar with and she was looking for guidance.
